Start Your Journey at Lions Park
After a long drive or simply the desire to enjoy the outdoors, Lions Park is the perfect place to start in Golden, Colorado. The park boasts a spacious playground suitable for children of all ages, surrounded by ample green space for energetic play. You can also bring along a picnic lunch and savor your meal at one of the available picnic tables or opt for a peaceful spot by the creek, if you prefer.
Walk Along The Clear Creek Trail to Golden History Park and Visit the Chickens!
Following your visit to Lions Park, enjoy a brief yet picturesque eastward stroll along the Clear Creek Trail to reach Golden History Park. For our little ones, the highlight here, and perhaps one of the best things to do in Golden with kids is the charming chicken coop. Don’t forget to bring some quarters along to purchase food for the friendly chickens. Additionally, you’ll find active beehives here, which offer an intriguing sight. After greeting the chickens, take some time to explore the well-preserved historic buildings dating back to the 1800s within the park’s grounds.
Stroll Down Washington Avenue for Shopping, Eats, and Treats.
A short walk east on the Clear Creek Trail will take you to Washington Ave, the bustling center of Golden. While it has modern shops and eateries, it retains its charming cowboy history. You can shop, dine, and enjoy treats all on this one street. Our favorite spots with kids are Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza, Bob’s Atomic Burgers (on Ford St.), and Goozell Yogurt & Coffee for sweet treats.
Take Slide at Parfet Park
Walk to the north end of Washington Avenue, and you’ll find a fun way to get back to the creek – the slide! Join your kids for a playful slide down to the Clear Creek Trail. Enjoy the ride!
Visit the Golden History Museum
One of our favorite things to do in Golden with kids is to visit the FREE Golden History Museum. Your kids can have a blast with hands-on exhibits, and you can dive into Golden’s fascinating history. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Walk along the Clear Creek Trail
Finish your day walking back along the Clear Creek Trail toward Lions Park where we begun our journey. If the kids aren’t completely worn out by now, consider trekking further westward along the trail as far as you wish before returning to the park. You’ll find tubers, kayakers, and swimmers on a nice day. The trail westward along the creek become very scenic as you start making your way into the mountains.
