Visiting the Free Zoo in Madison: Family Excursions to Henry Vilas Zoo

For many years now, our family has cherished frequent visits to the free zoo in Madison, Wisconsin: Henry Vilas Zoo. Close to my wife Jamie’s family, this remarkably free zoo has become a beloved staple of our family outings on our visits to Wisconsion. While it may be smaller than other paid zoos we’ve visited, such as those in Denver or Pittsburgh, the Henry Vilas Zoo offers a unique charm and convenience that makes it a standout attraction.

Despite its smaller size, the Henry Vilas Zoo boasts a variety of attractions that keep us coming back. The Henry Vilas Zoo is home to a diverse range of animals from around the world. From the playful red pandas and curious meerkats to the towering giraffes and gentle rhinos, there’s always something new to discover.

Exploring the Zoo

The zoo is thoughtfully organized into different areas, each showcasing unique habitats and species. Some of the key areas include:

Arctic Passage

Home to polar bears, grizzly bears, and harbor seals, this area replicates the icy habitats of the Arctic.

Primate Building

This exhibit features various primates, including lemurs, gibbons, and macaques.

Aviary

All the colorful birds to keep the kids entertained. The Macaws are a fan favorite for my son.

Adventure Play Area

A very well done play area that is perfect for my kids.

Conservation Carousel

One of our family favorites is the carousel, which adds a touch of whimsy to our visits. While this delightful ride is not free, the $3 fee is a small price to pay for the joy it brings to our children.

Parking

The zoo offers free parking, which is a rarity and a significant convenience for families.

Hours

The zoo is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

Donations

While entry is free, donations are greatly appreciated and help support the zoo’s ongoing operations and animal care.

Food and Drink

You can bring outside food and snacks, which we often do to keep our kids energized. While there are food options available for purchase, bringing your own picnic can be a fun and economical choice.
